Which sucks when trying to implement jQuery. I guess I'll just leave
any client side work to regular HTML controls and jQuery, or AJAX
extensions.

I think the OP is actually addressing the issue of Microsoft creating
two different systems for creating essentially the same thing.

If you have a VS2005 installation with SP1, you may well have the
choice between creating a New Web Site, or creating a Web Applciation
Project.

Indeed you are right. Asp tags don't work in separate Javascript
files.

Another possibility is to implement a similar system to the
AJAX.ASP.Net project, whereby a resource is used for the javascript.
You can add a javascript link to an axd script, then that axd script

It's becuase you can dynamically create controls in a loop, in master
pages etc. and in these situations the framework doesn't force you to
give each control a unique id, hence them beign renamed. In your code
behind, each control should have a read only ClientId property that
you can insert into your javascript if necessary.

For me, the brackets almost get in the way in the second one. I can
see how they could be used to clean it up, but there are so few

Whatever's inside the <%= %> gets run and becomes part of the HTML
that goes to the browser, so it will behave however it normally
would...

Suppose you have a textbox named txtLogin, but it renders as
ctl00_MyContentPlaceHolder_txt Login (or whatever it looks like - I
forget exactly how they render).
