The cursor keys (up/down) do that here...

Hi again. I appreciate the responses I've gotten but neither person seems to understand what I'm asking.
I am NOT talking about list view. I know how to use the arrow keys and space bar in list view.
I am talking about how to move to the next or previous message from an OPEN message WITHOUT having to switch to list view.
For instance, with MT-NewsWatcher, which I use for Usenet, I can hit the Command-I keys to go to the next message without going into NewsWatcher's list of messages. I would like to be able to do the same thing with Mail.
Years ago, I used to use Eudora and I remember being able to move from an open e-mail to the next e-mail by hitting a key, I think the space bar.
Maybe Mail doesn't have the ability that I am asking for, but if that's so then it seems a bit strange to me.

Mail doesn't have the ability to do what you're asking.

Which sucks. Mail isn't even HALF as functional as MacSOUP when it comes to reading email efficiently. MacSOUP has true references-based threading, graphical thread view, regular expressions, and of course handy shortcut keys including the spacebar to scroll through messages and then move to the next tagged message. Plus lots of other useful features I won't bore you with.
That said I do use Mail for non-mailing list email as I have to have IMAP, attachment and HTML support (which I hate, but require now and again). But I'd HATE to have to read mailing lists in anything but MacSOUP. -- If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.

Come on, Dave, you know very well that we're expected to automatically intuit the OP's exact situation, goals, and desires regardless of what they've actually written.
I spend most of my working day reading and writing emails, and very rarely need to open a mail message in its own window. When I do, it's only because I want to keep it open for reference while I'm doing something else, so even then I have no need to switch to the next or previous message (read, unread, tagged, chronological, or otherwise) within the same message window.
Like any Apple app, Mail is designed to do most things well for most people, with limited scope for customisation. Clearly you fall outside the range of 'most people' in this case, but hey, that's why third-party apps exist. Apps that try to be everything to everyone usually just end up being a usability mess.

If you read mail by (single) clicking into the list you can go to the next or previous message by using the cursor keys. You can't do that if you open a message in a window of its own or when you move the focus in the message pane (by clicking into it).
Does Mail work different for you? This is on Tiger, by the way.

But I realized there is a way to do what I want. And I apologize that maybe people were explaining it to me and I didn't understand.
I realized that if I split my e-mail view so that the e-mail list is at the top and the open message is at the bottom then I can move from message to message using the arrows keys.
I had been viewing my e-mails without splitting the window.
Anyway, thanks to everyone that posted a response.

This is actually the default in Mail. You have to drag the pane around (or doubleclick the divider area) to make the message pane go away.

I thought so...

I actually thought it was pretty obvious what his situation was. If he were using the preview pane he wouldn't have been having a problem, since the most intuitive method for doing what he wanted would have worked for him.
So he must have been viewing messages in their own window. Am I the only one who is able to read questions and infer what the poster really means?
You expect him to tell you specifically that he's not using the preview pane? He didn't even realize it existed, so how would he know that he needs to mention it? If you're not intelligent enough to make such simple inferences, maybe you should get out of the business of trying to help on Usenet.
