Is it a trick of perspective, or does Vinge have forearms like a

You know how (Dijkstra? Stephenson?) writes with quill pens he cuts
himself?  Well, Vinge's such a badass he _makes his own printing presses_.

Actually, he hires a secretary to hold a pen still and writes by
moving his desk around under it.
