Since these rankings are meant to measure performance *after* the games are
played, don't read too much into them as they stand. Right now, they're
based on a rather meaningless preseason formula that will gradually
disappear by about mid-October, usually around the time the first BCS
rankings are released. My rankings after that will reflect nothing but the
games actually played this season. Between now and then, expect some wacky
fluctuations. Or sometimes even not wacky; who knows? Try not to freak out,
though: just keep repeating to yourself, "It's early...it's early...it's
early..."
